Under Route 80
I love making photographs that contain patterns. When I saw the shapes of these trestles repeating themselves under a Route 80 bridge in Ohio's Cuyahoga National Park, I knew it was time to stop and take a picture.
Purity
My "Odds 'N Ends" Portfolio contains several images of gargoyles. I have specifically made photos of gargoyles that seem to convey certain emotions and have used that emotion as the title of each picture. These photographs were taken in color, converted to black and white, and have then had a heavy sepia tone applied, as I feel that this type of toning really brings out the emotion in the photographs.

Fluidity
This black and white version of the color image in the Intimate Landscapes Portfolio won a silver medal by B&W Magazine in their Single Image 2010 issue.
Purple Haze
What is it? It doesn't really matter, does it? After all, the image is about lines, shapes, and movement. It isn't really about the true nature of the subject. However, since most people want to know....it is a stand of trees. The photograph was made by moving the camera up and down during a long exposure.
Images like these are 'hit and miss', meaning you have to make a good number of them to find one that 'works'. For me, this one did!
Three Bottles
I was walking with my camera, unencumbered by my tripod, which is something that I don't do very often. It is said that when your mind is open and receptive the images come to you rather than the other way around.
I was really just trying to be aware of my surroundings when I saw this beautifully backlit restaurant window with three wine bottles on the inside sill. I was captivated by the light and the forms. I am actually still suprised that I saw it since it was well above the level of my head. I am glad I looked up!
Morning Fog
On an early morning trip to Lake Arthur, about an hour from my home, I was treated to a beautiful scene of fog rising through the trees at sunrise. One of the advantages of photographing near home is that you can return many times and experience the location throughout many different seasons and conditions.
Grain Elevator II
The simple geometric shapes are what attracted me to this almost abstract image of two grain elevators. In the back of my mind, I am thinking about doing a series of these types of images based on 'Geometry' if I can find enough subjects that work well.
528 Trees
No, not 528 trees, but trees at the Rt. 528 Boat Ramp. The early morning sunlight was falling directly on this grouping of trees, making them glow. The color photo was nice, but this was meant for black and white!
Dancing Trees
I was drawn to the abstract appearance of the trunk and branches of this tree, which were accentuated by converting to black and white and giving the image a high key appearance. The small tree at the bottom right echoed the main subject and competed the composition.
Dancing Trees II
These trees looked to me like they were dancing during a foggy morning in Moraine State Park.
Glowing Tree
I couldn't help but make a photograph of this tree in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park. It was backlit and the leaves looked like they were glowing from within. The trick was to find just the right angle to isolate it from the other trees around it so that the image would not appear cluttered. It took some maneuvering but I finally found the angle that 'looked just right' to me.
Stone Hands
Hands can be extraordinarily expressive. Even ones made of stone.
Tree And Birds
An exploration of life and light. Interpretations will vary. At least I hope they will.
Ancient Tree
To me, this tree conveyed a feeling of ancient knowledge and wisdom, as well as a spiritual connection to nature. The digital additions I made to this photograph transformed it into a piece that I hope conveys this idea. It is a tree that has witnessed quite a bit in its lifetime.
Holocaust Memories
This image was inspired by my visit to the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague. The walls of the synagogue are inscribed with the names of the the 77,297 known victims of the Holocaust from Bohemia and Moravia. I was quite moved by the visit and this digital composite is the pictorial expression of those emotions.
Coquille Lighthouse Steps
There was something about the steps of this lighthouse that really drew me in. Perhaps it was their shape. Perhaps it was the juxtaposition of cool and warm tones. Either way, I thought it made for a very interesting photograph.
Coquille River Lighthouse
Located near Bandon, Oregon, the Coquille River Lighthouse was first lit in 1896. It is actually on the Coquille River, as opposed to on the nearby ocean itself, and was built to help mariners negotiate dangerous shifting sandbars.
The lighthouse was ultimately shut down in 1939 and replaced with an automated light on the south jetty of the river. Restoration began on the lighthouse in 1976 and a new solar powered light was installed in 1991. The lighthouse is as beautiful now as it was in the 1800’s, though, unfortunately, the lighthouse keepers quarters was not able to be salvaged during the renovation.
Reflections Of Snow
Most people who see this photograph initially believe that it is either combined with a texture or otherwise markedly altered. However, that is not the case.
On a bright winter morning, this scene was reflected in the shiny granite of the Carnegie Mellon University Library. It was such an interesting reflection that I had to make a photograph of it and, in processing, turned it into a monochrome image in cool blue to fit the scene. Though there was some minimal snow coming down, the bright spots in the image are not actually snowflakes. They are actuallyreflections of sunlight striking the stone, which has various flecks of material embedded in it. I really enjoy this image!

Trees In Snow
All was white and silent. The snow was coming down. I tried to transmit that feeling in this image.
